My Sunflower Dream

My sunflower dream has come true!

I have always loved sunflowers. I have tried countless times to grow them in my garden.  There have been a few scrawny seedlings that grew a little bit and then were, sadly, eaten by woodland creatures.  I thought my sunflower dream would never come true.

This year, to my amazement, a sunflower is growing in my zucchini patch!  We have never planted any sunflower seeds here at this house.  Last year, we did buy a few small sunflowers that were in little pots that we placed in our courtyard area but not near where the zucchinis now grow.  My guess is that either a seed from those potted sunflowers floated on a breeze to the zucchini patch or perhaps a bird dropped it there.

Regardless, I am thrilled that this sunflower is growing!  Do you have any sunflowers in your garden?

  1. Hi Gina~

your sunflower is just beautiful...not matter how it got there! I have never planted sunflowers before, but this year I decided I would try. They are very small, I'm not sure they will ever be big :0( Next year I will plant them in a sunnier area, I think they are getting too much shade.

  2. Oh wow I bet that was a fun surprise, that is great!! I have planted some around my deck and they lasted but the ones I planted around my fence all were ate by something I think bunnies. But none this year.

    1. Barbara, so far it is about 5 feet tall. Birds are starting to eat the seeds. I will try to take a picture soon. xo

  6. Hi Gina!

Beautiful sunflower! That's crazy that it's in with your zucchini...a sweet little bird must have planted it. I planted sunflowers this year, but they aren't in a very sunny place, so I'm not sure how great they'll do, but I am hopeful!

Have a beautiful rest of your week! XOXO

But oh! the blessing it is to have a friend to whom one can speak fearlessly on any subject; with whom one's deepest as well as one's most foolish thoughts come out simply and safely. Oh, the comfort — the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person — having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all right out, just as they are, chaff and grain together; certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and then with the breath of kindness blow the rest away. ~Dinah Maria Craik, A Life for a Life, "Chapter XVI: Her Story," 1859
